DUPE or DROP: Primers

Is E.L.F’s Poreless Putty an Affordable Dupe for Tatcha’s Beloved Silk Canvas?

By Jamie Tigani

E.L.F. (eyes lips face) is an affordable makeup brand that is known for their inexpensive prices and consistent quality products. Tatcha began as a prestigious skincare brand and received a lot of publicity after Kim Kardashian raved about their Dewy Skin Setting Spray. Since then, Tatcha is slowly adding makeup products to their high-end line, which started with the Silk Canvas Primer in 2017. Despite the $52 price, it kept selling out upon launch and quickly became a cult favorite in the makeup world. In 2019, E.L.F. released the $8 Poreless Putty Primer, and the internet was SHOOK. The similar milky pink shade of product and almost identical texture are just the beginning of the common factors between these two primers.

Before I get into my reviews, you should know a little bit about my skin. I have a light to medium complexion with combination skin. My problem areas are my acne scars and the large pores around my nose and lower forehead. (AKA I am always on the hunt for pore-filling primers!)

Here is my breakdown of each product after wearing them for multiple weeks with the same makeup on top:

Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer
  • $52 for 0.7 ounces
  • Weighty, fancy packaging
  • Smells nice
  • Does an adequate job of filling in the pores
  • Lightweight and very smooth feeling on the skin
  • Comes with a tiny disc so you can pick up the right amount of product without having to use your fingers
E.L.F. Poreless Putty Primer
  • $8 for 0.74 ounces
  • Cheap packaging
  • No scent
  • Feels a little thicker than the Tatcha primer
  • Does an adequate job of filling in the pores
  • Feels smooth but is less moisturizing than the Tatcha primer

Final thoughts: You can’t go wrong with either primer. If you have dry skin and can afford to spend the money on the Tatcha Silk Canvas, I say go for it! But if you want to get similar results for a cheaper price, buy the E.L.F. primer. In addition, E.L.F recently added two more Putty Primers to their line—one that is moisturizing and one that is mattifying.
