Is The World's Bestselling Blush Dupable?
By Jamie Tigani
When NARS launched a shimmery coral blush in 1999, no one could have predicted it would be the number one-selling blush to this day. For two decades the shade Orgasm has reigned supreme despite numerous makeup brands attempting to recreate it. And whether or not you wear makeup, you’ve probably heard of this iconic product.
So, you may be asking, what is so special about this blush? What makes it different from the thousands of other blushes on the market? To answer those questions, I refer you to a 2019 interview with Mr. Nars himself and Jake Broullard, the brand’s lead makeup artist.
“Orgasm is special because it happens to suit all skin tones,” Nars explained. “The pink color and subtle shimmer gives you a natural flush. It’s flattering for so many women.”
Broullard agrees: “Orgasm is a blush that is different from all others because it blends warm and cool tones--the mix of peach, pink, and gold are balanced perfectly. This blush can be used as a highlighter or as a pop of color on the cheek. It mixes perfectly with any other blush color you may have in your makeup wardrobe. “Of course, the name itself continues to add allure to this iconic product. Everyone wants an orgasm.”
As the hype surrounding Orgasm grew, the demand for blush escalated. What was once a dispensable product quickly became a crucial step in every person’s makeup routine; and for many, including myself, Orgasm is the first blush they ever bought.
Let’s fast forward--I now have an entire drawer full of blush. Over the years I have encountered 4 blushes that not only successfully replicated Orgasm’s unique effect on the skin, but they surpassed my expectations.
This baked formula lightly blurs your skin while adding a wash of peach to your cheeks. This is the least pigmented blush of the 5, so if you’re looking for a more subtle color, this is the one for you.
Rose Gold $7.95
This UK cosmetics company replicated the gold shimmer from Orgasm but altered the shade to be a bit more pink. I recommend using a light hand when applying this blush because it packs a punch!
Natasha Denona Alba $38
The Duo Glow blush gives a supernatural glow with its highly pigmented formula and duo-chrome effect. It is the most pigmented of the bunch and lasts the longest on the skin.
Hot Mama $20
In my opinion, this blush is the most similar to NARS’ Orgasm when swatching them side by side. However, Hot Mama has even more shimmer in it, and the color is slightly more coral. If you have textured skin or large pores, I would avoid this one because it tends to enhance those features.
